Suomen Hy\u00f6tytuuli Oy is constructing an offshore wind farm in Pori, Finland. The construction of the world\u2019s first offshore wind farm suitable for icy conditions will start this spring. The costs of constructing the wind farm, consisting of ten wind turbines, are just under MEUR 120. The turbine supplier is Siemens, and the undersea foundations for the turbines are manufactured by Technip Offshore Finland in Pori. The substation and main transformers are supplied by ABB. <\/em>
\nThe offshore wind farm will have ten 4 MW offshore turbines, supplied by Siemens. Rotor hub height is approx. 90 meters and rotor diameter 130 meters. The gravity-based steel foundations, filled with rock material, are supplied by Technip Offshore Finland. ABB is the electrical contractor on land and supplies, for instance, the substation and main transformers; the main components for these are manufactured in Finland.
\n\u201cThe conditions for offshore wind power are excellent in Finland: we have a long coastline, windy conditions, shallow waters, and a hard seafloor, as well as harbours and industrial infrastructure all along the coastline. Offshore wind power produces roughly one and a half times the energy of onshore wind power,\u201d says Toni Sulameri<\/strong>, the Managing Director of Suomen Hy\u00f6tytuuli Oy.
\n\u201cThe construction expenses are nearly double the expenses required for onshore wind power, in particular due to the undersea foundations and cablings. The demonstration project at Tahkoluoto is used to determine a cost-efficient way of building wind power in Finnish conditions: the developing and growing business has room for new export products to lower the level of costs\u201d, Sulameri says.
\nConstruction will start with dredging this spring. The underground cable and substation will be installed between the upcoming and following summers, the foundations and undersea cable in spring and summer 2017. \u201cThe turbines will be erected in summer 2017, and the wind farm will produce energy in the autumn of the same year\u201d, says Arto Huhmarkangas<\/strong>, Project Director for the offshore wind farm.
\nThe wind farm\u2019s estimated annual production is over 155 million kilowatt-hours, which is equal to the annual electricity consumption of 8,600 electrically heated single-family houses. The area also has a pilot turbine that has provided information on the production of offshore wind power, the durability of foundations, and on the maintenance operations since 2010. In November 2014, the Ministry of Employment and the Economy granted MEUR 20 in investment subsidy to the construction project. The purpose of the subsidy is to provide business opportunities for Finnish technology expertise in several lines of business.
